Heriz 376 x 283cm
Origin: North West Asia
Circa: last ¼ 20th Century.
Size: 376 x 283cm
Heriz rugs are from the East Azerbaijan region in North West Iran. Heriz carpets have some of the strongest and most lustrous wool available due to the high copper content in the soil which as they are used means they ‘sing’ which is often tried to be replicated in modern carpet washing using acid or plant and nut finishing washes.
Early ones have large scale unfussy geometric motifs and mainly with a large scale central medallion, woven usually from memory. The younger ones continue with this tradition but as see here fill the large designs with lots of smaller motifs and less varied in colour. This late 20th Century piece is predominantly red and will be durable and hard wearing enabling it to last for generations.
